A connection I can't seem to shake

Even though it's been about a year since I read this one, I still cannot shake Nafisi's sense of incredulity as the Iranian revolution changed the world around her. Up until that period, she points out that Iran was perhaps the most progressive country in the Middle East. Its citizens had a relatively great deal of freedom that they took for granted. It had not occurred to her and the women of her book group that the government would actually follow through with rescinding their rights all in the name of Allah.

I cannot help but connect this to the blatant religious agenda embedded within our political leadership. In my little right-wing community, I shudder at the support Ayatollah Bush elicits. I wonder if we will eventually look back and regret our collective complancency.
